The general gun control narrative has taken a back seat. A lot of the Democrats running for president in 2020 are shying away from talking about gun laws. They know, like so many before them, that it’s a losing topic. That doesn’t stop certain prominent Democratic figures from continuing to push the narrative.
As usual, Trump-hating media mogul Michael Bloomberg is the thought leader in this effort. His latest tactic is to push smart guns. It’s a technology that no manufacturer in the world is ready to mass produce, but he’s obsessed with it all the same.
What Is a Smart Gun?
Plenty of you are familiar with the concept, but let’s be thorough. A smart gun is a device that can detect its user and prevent firing if an unauthorized user handles the firearm. You’ve certainly seen examples of it in science fiction, but there are technologies today that could make such a gun a reality. Entire prototypes have been developed.
In most cases, biometric locks are used to determine whether a user is the owner of the firearm or not. The same biometrics that make for fast-unlocking gun safes can be put into the weapon itself. From there, a simple safety mechanism can lock the firing pin.
The theory pushed by proponents of smart guns is that this mechanism improves safety. A child can’t accidentally shoot themselves with their parent’s weapon. Perhaps more importantly a stolen weapon can never be used to commit a crime. These are the ideals, but in practice, there are always methods to circumvent safety protocols, and there’s always a cost to anything. We’ll cover that in a bit, but first we have to get to Michael Bloomberg.
Bloomberg’s Ridiculous Conspiracy Theory
Using his own paper for propaganda, Bloomberg is pushing the narrative that smart guns would be everywhere by now if not for the NRA. After all, the first smart gun technology was developed in the late 90s. Smith & Wesson even developed a prototype, but they were never able to take it to market.
Bloomberg asserts that legislation killed the smart gun, and legislators did this at the behest of the NRA. He also says this was done in spite of the fact that 60 percent of gun owners want a smart gun.
Let’s inject some truth into all of this. First, legislation has inhibited the production of smart guns. The things is, that legislation didn’t come from the NRA. Restrictive requirements on gun manufacturers almost all come from the left. Democratic rules are what make it nearly impossible for manufacturers to produce a smart gun that is legally compliant.
Secondly, that statistic about gun owners isn’t entirely honest. Sure, a lot of gun owners would be curious about smart guns and want to play with one. Every gun channel on YouTube would have a demonstration video. That doesn’t mean that the majority of gun owners would want to exclusively own smart guns. It just means that it’s a novelty item that might sell enough to justify the cost of development. It also might not.
Here’s the biggest truth about why manufacturers aren’t crazy about developing smart guns. The core crowd of gun owners isn’t thrilled with the idea. Novelty aside, smart mechanisms only introduce more potential failure points. Anyone who uses a firearm for defense (whether from people or animals) understands why this is a dangerous addition to their trusty weapon.
On top of that, smart guns make it really hard to show people how to shoot. Pretty much everyone learns to shoot by firing someone else’s weapon. Parents who want to teach their kids, friends, and firearm instructors would all shy away from smart guns.
Inalienable Rights
That, of course, is the ulterior motive. If smart guns are widely manufactured, plenty of states will be able to pass laws that prohibit the sale of any guns that aren’t smart. Once that’s in place, it’s a lot harder to introduce newcomers to firearms. The smart gun is a mechanism that Bloomberg wishes he could use to prevent the next generation from ever learning how to handle a firearm. It’s a technology aimed at disarming the population.
This and every other fight over guns and regulations always comes back to the same thing. The left doesn’t want to save lives. If they did, getting rid of doctors would save more people than banning guns. Seriously.
The goal is to disarm the population. The left wants to instill a dictatorship in our country, and the biggest obstacle they face is the 100+ million gun owners in this country. As gun owners, we know that this is the endgame, and it’s why we’ll continue to fight every step of the way.
