One would think that in these days of instant credit checks the National Instant Check System (NICS) does what its name implies -provide real-time information. The problem with that is NICS is not instant and not that important to governors like Andrew Cuomo of New York.
Gun-rights advocates have been pointing out for years that enforcing current laws and improving NICS would leave no need for new laws.
Instead of fixing NICS, Cuomo and others insist that making it harder for law-abiding citizens to obtain a gun is more important. Their answer is longer waiting periods to obtain what should be instant.
The purpose of a waiting period, first proposed in Lyndon Johnson’s Gun Control Act of 1968, is to allow law enforcement time to run a license check on you to see if you have a record or any outstanding warrants. It has nothing to do with ensuring a firearm doesn’t end up in the hands of the wrong person.
If politicians were serious about the real gun problem, they would enforce existing laws that ensure massive penalties for those prohibited from possessing a weapon. Nancy Pelosi would not stand in the way of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from preventing illegal immigrants from buying guns. Governor Cuomo would seek to ensure felony convictions are included in the NICS database.
Because Cuomo doesn’t do this but spends his time pushing for longer waiting periods proves he isn’t serious about stopping shootings like those in Aurora, Illinois or Parkland, Florida.
The real goal is to turn the process into a form of punishment that prevents law-abiding citizens from exercising their Second Amendment rights.
One only has to go back to moves made by Sarah Brady and Rep. Jerrold Nadler to understand there is so little emphasis on fixing NICS and enacting unneeded longer waiting periods.
Sarah Brady, chair of the nation’s largest anti-gun group, the Brady Campaign, discussed her plans for the future with the New York Times on August 15, 1993. In that interview, she said that her group favored a “needs-based licensing” system, with all guns and all gun transfers registered.
As an NRA spokesman said later, “In the Brady world, an honest citizen who wanted to own a gun would have to prove to his or her local police the “need” for that gun.”
Earlier this month Democrat Representative Jerry Nadler said he intends to use his position as House Judiciary Committee Chairman to enact sweeping new gun laws. He told CNN’s Chris Cuomo, “We will pass — I would venture to predict that we will pass possibly into law this year universal background checks, maybe the Charleston loophole, and we will develop the political pressure to pass assault weapons bans and other things in the next few years.”
In that interview, Nadler dismissed the importance of what the NICS was created for – to keep mentally ill people from possessing the weapons he claims are the problem. According to Nadler, the real problem is the “number of guns available to people who shouldn’t have them” not the number of people who should have guns.
Nadler tipped the hand of all gun-control advocates when he pointed to Australia as his shining example. Remember it is Australia that banned all semi-automatic and self-loading rifles and shotguns in 1996. Australia also launched a nationwide buyback program for prohibited weapons as a measure to keep guns out of the hands of peaceful citizens.
Of concern is that Naddler has no desire to let his colleague, Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), offer his own insights before that committee. If anyone could speak from personal experience it is Rep. Scalise, having been nearly fatally wounded by a crazed Republican hating gunman at a congressional baseball practice.
As Scalise told Fox News’s Laura Ingraham last week, “I saw how guns were used to save people’s lives. And it should have been able to be part of the testimony.”
Scalise then got to the heart of the goal of Naddler and others like Cuomo. He said, “ They wanted to focus on taking away the rights of law-abiding citizens, which their bill ultimately does.”
This is why the state of New York throws up a smoke screen like longer waiting periods while ignoring the problems with NICS. They, like Brady, want a “needs based” system. A system that excludes you.
As usual, Cuomo and other democrats don’t let facts get in the way of their elitist decisions. They have armed guards and walls for their own protection but would leave us defenseless! The real reason is control. Unarmed citizenry are much more easily controlled by government. When is the Supreme Court going to put an end to would be dictators trying to control us?

As soon as one of these gun grabbers has to face a situation and a person with a firearm comes to their aid, they’ll have to back pedal and rethink how they’re going to support gun bans. As expected they’ll create exemptions for themselves while us common people will live in fear of criminals and a potential police state.
Their hypocrisy has gone to far. These are people who live sheltered and protected by gates and guards and are driven in limos or they drive around in SUV’s and unlike regular people, they’ll receive a quick response from law enforcement due to their status and occupation. Why is it that these people of greater means are allowed to live in greater security while the citizens, who pay their wages, must pay for their own security or be denied that potential? Our their lives more valued than ours? Will they show up at our homes at 3am with their body guards or executive protection team if we report a break in?
It’s never their fault or a criminals fault for use of a firearm to commit a crime. Somehow they’ve made legal gun ownership and law abiding people into criminals and scapegoats to further their agenda to disarm the people and to weaken the country for socialism.

Want to stop them? Don’t vote them in. If NY and others keep doing so, people who are concerned with their safety should move out of those states and into states that allow you to protect yourself. It would produce two advantages: concentrate voters into 2nd amendment friendly states and let the non-gun voters self-destruct. As for the federal level, get our reps to pass laws requiring the existing laws to be enforced and funding the NICS system properly. Lastly join and contribute to the NRA as they are evidently the only ones willing to challenge the 2nd amendment haters.
